What is SSL?
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is the standard in security technology that creates an encrypted link between your web server and your client’s browser. SSL is the industry standard and is used by millions of websites to secure online transactions with their customers. Even if SSL encrypted data is intercepted while in transit its security is maintained by the millions of possible decryption answers provided by 128 bit encryption.

Once SSL has been integrated into your site any customers who proceed to make transactions will see the key indicator provided to them by their web browser - the Padlock. This will let them know they are currently protected by a SSL encrypted session.

How Does SSL Work?
  1. A customer connects to your site using their browser and navigates to a secure URL where the purchasing process begins. This page is secured by a server ID. This is indicated by the URL which will begin with ‘https:’ instead of the usual ‘http:’
  2. Your web server will respond by automatically sending the customer’s browser your site’s SSL digital certificate which authenticates your site.
  3. Your customer’s web browser then generates a unique ‘session key’ code to encrypt all communications between it and you site.
  4. The customer’s browser encrypts the session key with your web site’s public key so only your site can read the session key.
  5. A secure session is now established. All communications are encrypted and can only be decrypted by the two parties in the session - your site and your visitor’s browser.
The Costs of SSL
A SSL web server certificate for the period of one year costs in the order of $400. This includes generation and hosting. The costs are generally lower for do-it-yourself SSL web server certificates, also for one year, at around $330. Some Wraith Dragom Media web hosting plans includes access to our free SSL server. Our web hosting plans can be found here.
